What is BlueSky authenticated Transfer Protocol (ADX)?

Bluesky was created to build a social protocol. In the spring, we released “ADX,” the very first iteration of the protocol. Over the summer we improved and simplified ADX’s design, and today we’re sharing a preview of what’s to come. ADX is now the “Authenticated Transfer Protocol” — or, more simply, the “AT Protocol.”

Born out of a working group within Twitter and now operating as a separate entity, Bluesky is built on the Authenticated Transport (AT) protocol—a federated social network framework that encourages diverse participation.

Called authenticated transport (AT) protocol, this is the technology upon which Bluesky is built. While Bluesky is the first major release on AT protocol, the technology is open and available for use by any user, developer, or company (in much the same way anyone can build on a public blockchain like Ethereum).
